I am responding to my comments here because for some reason LJ won't let me respond directly...

Thanks!  Yes, basically I have been going to the hospital or home when the mom is in active labor and then I stay for about 1-2 hours after the birth.  At this point I have photographed as many hospital births as homebirths and next month I will have another of each.  I love attending births wherever they take place, but realize how lucky I am to have been invited to so many homebirths. I would LOVE to photograph a cesarean!

Anyways,  what I have been giving to the families after the birth is between 40-60 4x6 prints of the delivery and a slideshow set to music.  Everyone seems happy with this.

This is so great for you, I am utterly jealous!

how do you go about the whole thing, do you just come to the hospital whenever they feel like calling and stay until the end?

I wouldnt be able to offer something like this until Gage was older and I could always be available to leave the house for a few hours, but I would LOVE to.

I photographed ONE birth, but it was a cs.
still wonderful babyness, but a real birth....wow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks A I really appreciate it!  Just let me know when you want to get together!  I'm glad to hear M seems to be doing well, that is weird though how everything happened.  Didn't they just move from their house into a different one?
I am going to write your website, name, phone # down and pass it onto some of the new moms at our church. If I can't have my newborns photographed (since. I don't have anymore and don't plan to) this will be the next best thing.
Speaking of photographs, our financial stuff has been crazy tight recently but we have tax refund coming SOON. I should set up a photo time with you. We really need new, good, individual and family photos!
I heard from MM today and she is doing good, seems happy. Her husband is looking for a job and then they'll look for a place to live (they are with family right now).
Thanks!
I love the card!
After a few images from the last birth I photographed were shared I had over 1000 new views to my little photo site in a matter of days. Since then 3 more women have contacted me about attending their births ~ one is a homebirth in early March who said that I do have "the job", another is having a hospital birth in March and the last is not yet even pregnant, but said she is planning to contact me when she conceives later this year.
I made up new birth photography postcards to send to a few area doulas who offered to put them in their packets for me:
There are a few things I changed to the ones that are being printed, but this is the general idea. I hope everyone likes them!
Newborn pictures tomorrow...
I've been given a great opportunity by a sonographer who works with a Dr. out of Harris Southwest Hospital. After my Jan. birth photography client showed her some of my pictures she suggested that I bring a basket full of my newborn & birth pictures, sample birth announcements, business cards, etc up to keep in either the Dr.s reception area or the sonogram room. I haven't done many announcements yet, but I started working on them last night and this is what I have come up with so far...
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I am going to design as many as I can until "G" gives birth and I complete her birth and newborn sessions, then have them all printed and put in a nice little album to put in the basket. I really need to attend more hospital births to have enough of a variety to fill it up, I am sure they wouldn't appreciate seeing images of the home waterbirths I have photographed and will photograph in the upcoming months. I did recieve an email last night from a woman who is planning a scheduled cesarean in May, so I REALLY hope that works out, but it is probably too far off to wait to send my info up to the sonographers.
Does anyone have any ideas on other items I should put in this little basket or ways to make it scream "HIRE ME!"? I want it to look very nice and eye-catching. Something that will make people realize that birth photography is a good idea!
I have been talking with a woman who is due late January about birth photography, but I am not sure if it is going to work out or not.  There is a bit of uncertainty about whether she wil be delivering at home or in the hospital, as well as where they will be living during her due month.   She would like to have a waterbirth if at home though and I would be happy to see another one.  Hopefully I will hear back from her soon!!
The woman that only hired me weeks ago to photograph her birth delivered a big baby boy Monday evening.  She had an amazing birth and I was so incredibly impressed by her and her support team.
Here are a few of my favorite pictures:
I really like the above picture because it shows how many people she had loving on her throughout her day-long labor, she actually had 1 other friend there, but her hands aren't pictured here...
This child was born listening to the sound of Christmas music playing on CD.
I only have one more birth photography client - in January, hopefully soon someone else will hear about me and ask me to attend their birth as well.
Last Monday I was hired to photograph another birth!  I haven't met the woman, but I know an acquaintance of hers as well as her doula, so she is very comfortable and excited to have me there.  Her due date is Dec. 3rd and she is planning to have a natural birth to her 1st baby, a boy.
I am really looking forward to this!
I also recieved another inquiry about birth photography on Friday, but after I sent her part of the slideshow from the November birth I didn't hear back.  Well, she can't say I didn't warn her that it was graphic!
The other mom wrote me back this morning and does definitely want to have me take her birth pictures! She is due January 24th and will be delivering at Harris Southwest. We are going to meet for lunch on Wednesday to discuss the type of pictures she wants.
Last night I was arranging all the photos from the Friday birth so I could watch them as a slideshow and see what the "emotional impact" would be and Bert walked in, saw a few of them and told me that people would pay a fortune for the shots I got. I am not charging a fortune though because *I* couldn't afford that if I was having another baby and wanted to have pictures taken.
I also spoke to the Friday birth mom yesterday evening and she said that her neighbor - who happens to be pregnant and due in Dec. - was very intrigued by the idea of birth photography, so I am hoping that if she sees "Friday moms" slideshow she won't be able to resist hiring me as well. She is having a scheduled cesarean though, and I am not sure if cameras and an extra person are even allowed in the operating room. One can only hope.
This morning I found an email in my inbox asking for pricing and other info on my birth photography for a delivery in late January 07! Oh my gosh! I responded quickly but haven't heard back yet. I don't know if she will actually hire me or not, but I really, really hope she does.
I am finally making it big in the birth community here! Haha. Just kidding. It would be so awesome to have 1 birth photography session each month though. I just need Dec. 06 to be filled and then from Feb. 07 until the rest of my life.
I attended a very fast, easy natural birth in Arlington today.  I am so glad that I was given this opportunity, it was so nice to be a part of.  I hope the parents enjoy their pictures.  This is one of my favorites:
The hardest part of taking pictures of older children is that they think they have to smile each time and each smile is their "say cheese" smile.
I think this is one of my favorites because I caught her expression before it became too un-natural and because it shows off her beautiful eyes so well.
A few weeks ago I took senior pictures for a girl and they were all so happy that her mom recently emailed me asking for more business cards to hand out.  When I wrote back I mentioned that I am REALLY wanting to do more newborn photography, so if she knows of anyone who might be interested send them my way.  She responded by saying that she actually works with 4 pregnant women and 1very new mom and she will give them all my cards!!!  Yay!
The woman whos birth I will be attending is due in 9 days.  I am so excited.  I have been sleeping with my cell phone by my ear at night.  She has already started giving others my name too, even though I haven't actually taken any pictures for her yet!
I know now that I want to photograph mainly newborns and am glad that I specified on my promo card that the babies need to be within 3 weeks of birth to qualify for the "special offer."  I had so much fun taking pictures of the baby from yesterday even though she didn't really sleep or curl up into a little posed ball in the middle of my big fluffy blanket I brought for her.  I am really happy with the shots I did get and hopefully her parents will be too.  Here is one:
She is so cute.
I can't wait until Jenn's birth the end of this month.  I am just nervous about finding my way through the hospital parking lot, into the building and up to the correct room.  It will be so awesome to attend another birth and the best part is that I will get to go back within 48 hours to take newborn portraits.  Hopefully the baby will still be sleepy enough that I will be able to pose him/her in as many different ways as I can think of and get tons of good pictures to use on my website for when/if I ever build one.  I have been looking forward to this for so long.
When I took pictures for the Patel family again a week and a half ago Amisha told me that her husband, the OB, would like to have a picture of their daughter enlarged and framed to put in the waiting area of his office along with my business cards.  After that I started thinking that a better way to have people come to me for newborn pictures would be to offer an incentive so I came up with this to be given out instead of regular cards:
I think it is super cute but when I sent it to her to make sure that she was okay with this card AND to schedule a time for me to come out an take a portrait type photo of Asha to be framed I never got a reply back.  I am really irritated because I have to have permission to use this photo before I can have them printed to hand out to anyone, not just the women that would have seen them in Dr. Patels office.   I even have a few doulas willing to hand these promo cards out in their pregnancy/birth packets, but I have nothing to give them until I hear back from Amisha.  Grrrrr....
Okay this is what happened today:  I went to a playgroup with the owner of the online store that I took photos for a couple of weeks ago.  She told me that she has recieved so many compliments on the front page picture: and that the company that sells this coat and hat actually asked to buy rights to it so that they can use it for advertising!  She, of course, told them that she couldn't sell it because she doesn't own the picture, but when she told me about it today I jumped all over this opportunity!  At the very least this would be something really neat to tell Paityn when she gets older!
She was supposed to give them my info so we just have to wait and see what happens, hopefully it won't take too long!
LOVE this picture from my last photo session!
I have actually be meaning to write about that particular session since it was probably the highlight of August and what better time than the present?
The conversation with them actually went surprisingly similar to what I had been daydreaming about, they even gave me the opportunity to mention that Naiya was born in the water and was a VBAC without my having to search for a way to bring it up.  Amisha was interested, all Amit said at 1st was "Wow, you had a vbac at home, that's interesting."  He had such an odd look on his face, I did wonder if he was going to as me to leave.  What can you expect from an OB though?  I told him that there just aren't that many options for a woman who is not wanting to schedule repeat surgeries and he launched into the current recommendations about 24 hour anesthesia for a VBAC labor.  At some point I stopped listening and was happy when the baby was ready to have her photos taken.
About the photos:  I totally kicked ass and they loved all of them!  They have asked me to come back and take more, I will also have a session with Amisha's sister from Dallas sometime in September.  She said that if I had business cards she would hand them out for me, so I designed some, had them printed and they arrived today looking awesome.
I am trying to think of ways that I can photograph more newborns...maybe that will cure the baby fever I have come down with in the past week or so.
I can't believe how this is all falling into my lap.  Last night I was contacted by a woman asking about my photography, it turns out that her husband is the new OB/GYN in Granbury!  HA!  I can just see the conversation we have when I am shooting:
So where was your baby born Amisha?
Such and such hospital, what about your children?
Well Paityn was almost born in the car and Naiya was born at home.  Gee whiz I wish it was easier to have a vbac in the hospital.  But I guess with Naiya being just under 10 lbs that might have worried even the most supportive vbac friendly dr, guess that it was better that she came at home with a midwife since she was SO past due.
Okay so this conversation will never happen, but I can dream, can't I?  Actually maybe somehow I could use this opportunity to get more birth photography clients, of course, they would be hospital births, but everyone does love these Granbury OBs so maybe they would still be great... Hmmm.
 Where are my home/birth center birth photography clients???
